The importance of Service Learning

The Importance of Service Learning in School

One often-neglected area of education is the area of Service Learning.  Service learning refers to times when students learn to become better citizens by helping others.  This type of learning has, however become a larger part of what we do in schools.  This can take the form of doing acts of kindness in the classroom, school, community, country or the wider world in an effort to make these places better.

Service learning takes many forms that range from having students make plans to help the environment by cleaning up the school yard, to building relationships with seniors in the community, or even raising money and doing work for families and citizens in the third world.

On October 26 our Leadership Club students had the opportunity to attend We Day, a huge celebration and concert to kick off a year of service to the community and wider world.  The day was opened my Mayor Nenshi and this made me think of a video he was in in the spring.  Please watch below:

This video is important to us, because it is at a seniors centre right here in Whitehorn.  Sometimes, a great service project can even just be something that makes others in the community happy.  I wonder if there is something we can do in our school for this group of people?  What can we do in response to this amazing video?

If you are a student, please let Mr. Southworth know.
